Charity record tumbles at dance event

Second Year Event Management students Natasha Kapp, Louise Sims, Jess Vancuylenberg, Sian Pugh and Richard Cheetham recently organised the first UCLan Dance Competition in aid of Barnardo's.

Over 200 competitors plus supporters from seven different universities travelled from Leeds, Manchester, Salford, Lancaster, Belfast and Essex to take part in the event at the Sir Tom Finney Sports Centre (STFSC).

There were classes for a variety of dance genres ranging from ballet to hip-hop, with all competitors enthusiastically supported by their teams. Judges for the competition were professional dancers Alice Salmon and Jessica Jackson and winner of BBC1's Strictly Dance Fever, Joseph Hall.

The judges praised the very high standard of dancing, commenting that several of the dancers were already of a professional standard. They also unanimously praised the STFSC facilities and the Event Management group who organised the event so efficiently. The coveted trophies were awarded evenly across the competing universities, including UCLan.

UCLan Dance Society Chair Natasha said: "Feedback from the competitors has been really positive and there seems to be a real appetite for this sort of thing. Maybe this can go on to be an annual event."

A UCLan record of £1200 was raised for Barnardo's.
