Barnado's visit UCLan

Samantha Howarth and Jane Harries, Community Fundraising Volunteer Managers for Barnardo's, visited UCLan to talk to 2nd Year Events students and to kick-start this year's live events for the Events in Action Module.

Each year students work in small groups to devise, pitch, plan, organise and deliver events to raise money for Barnardo's, which enables them to put academic theory into practice. Last year over £3,000 was raised, taking the overall total above the £9,000 mark.

In their presentation, Samantha and Jane explained the history of Barnardo's and some of the areas they cover. They shared some personal stories of the many young people they have helped and outlined what funds raised might be used for. All the money collected by UCLan is ring-fenced to be used in Preston and the surrounding area.

The presentation put the forthcoming fundraising efforts into context and already students have started to work on their ideas for potential events. These ideas will be presented to Barnardo's, as the client, as a formal 'pitch' as part of the assessment for the module. If successful, the groups will have the opportunity to make their ideas become reality in the New Year.
